In line with PTV 4’s commitment to provide the nation by bringing the reliable source of non-stop news and information, the Kasama Network introduces a new Saturday night habit with a sitcom that combines the delivery of the news and Filipino TV viewers’ laugh-out-loud antics while informing the public of the government, for students (elementary and high school) who just relax at home and enjoy the first few waking hours into their school-free weekend at night.
Expect news, sketches, skits, and story about the relevant and timely news—rolled into one as the government-owned station PTV proudly presents its newest Saturday primetime offering, Rated Marriel, the first ever news comedy show on Philippine TV topbilled by rising teen star Marriel Dagohoy as the only primetime princess of PTV as a title role Ate Marriel as a teener newscaster in the first-ever weekend primetime comedy sitcom formatted as a news program as part of the nation's weekend primetime programming and beyond our primetime newscasts.
Marriel is the newest PTV star to join their ever-growing roster of talents. As the original production of the state-owned People's Television Network (PTV), Rated Marriel is a refreshing one-hour comedy TV show about the government news and information with a fun and exciting twist, which adopts the format of the news program and a sketch comedy show with a mix of news gathering and news broadcast superimposed on a family-oriented sitcom focused on the Philippine government, a first in Philippine television.
"Merong mga programa to inform, educate and empower its viewers about the Philippine government and the news is so good, siyempre, we twist it to make it light and not so funny because of the most of news savvy good," Marriel told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in a recent conversation at Dulcinea restaurant on Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
Unlike these gag shows are the usual hilarious gags, pranks and spoofs, Rated Marriel is not a usual gag show, but a pure sitcom because of the good news ever. The show is set to change the landscape of weekend primetime viewing by offering the audience a feel-good news sitcom that goes beyond the daily primetime newscasts in that time slot. This fact is not so spoofing, since the news of this show points to a primetime newscast and the dominance of its Saturday primetrime sitcoms.
During the July 5 press conference held at Max's restaurant, Roces Avenue in Quezon City, the cast members were asked how they think they would fare against the top-rating programs of ABS-CBN, GMA-7 and IBC-13. Marriel responded by saying, "Do'n sa tatlong network, sila ng talents at stars. Ang nasa program nila ‘yung mga talents lang nila at pati ang PTV talents. Dito ang laban namin ‘yung talents ng tatlo, magkakasama. Parang dito [sa Rated Marriel] lang mangyayari pagdating sa balita. Para sa bayan."
She added: "Siguro it's about time na rin na mapanood ang mga sitcoms ng mas maaga. Gabing-gabi na kasi ‘yung iba. Meron pa, balita muna."
As the show-within-a-show for the people and dishing out the latest news developments, Rated Marriel's story revolves around the lives of Marriel (played by Dagohoy), a cute, pretty and smart high school classmate at the public high school Barangay Vasra High School. Segments and sketches with a mix of news gathering and news broadcast as the government news and information will be introduced. First in Philippine television, the program is patterned as a sketch comedy sitcom in a fun-filled hour.
As a homegrown talent of a state-run Kasama network, Marriel shifts from one role after another such as high school student, daughter of her family and high school varsity player and accepted as a newscaster, host and acting role, aiming to provide laughter for the audiences and delivers current events with a flair for comedy by showcasing a typical comedic sketches, segments and skits focused on the daily news, current issues, current developments and public information of the Philippine government.
There will be continuity between their settings (including house setting and public high school setting) and the segments being featured in the show to the Filipino viewing public and to the people, skits and dialogues of characters are delivered in the show with a government mandate. With the experiences and versatility of the hottest stars, the challenge here is how to make people laugh yet maintain high integrity and credibility in bringing the news and information.
Also part of the very first PTV-produced comedy show are Donny Pangilinan, the son of award-winning actress Maricel Laxa and TV host and news anchor Anthony Pangilinan, as her leading man Donny Andanar, Kaye Abad as Marriel's mother, Arnold Reyes as Marriel's father, Zyren dela Cruz as Marriel's youngest brother and Kaye and Patrick's second child, Kelvin Miranda as Marriel's classmate/bestfriend, Jarius Aquino as Marriel's classmate and Kurt's friend, Rowvery Trinidad, Steph Henares and JC Tejano.
On its premiere and opens a new school year with an opening classes, the pilot episode begins with a crowd of fans (including elementary kids) trying to get into Rated Marriel as the news program, and Ma'am Steph (Henares), who is a 29-year-old teacher of Barangay Vasra High School and puts the word 'Rated Marriel,' would do teaching to meet Marriel and the casting director is shown to work at the headquarters. Meanwhile, Marriel, who hires her to work at PTV as a newscaster aka anchorgirl in the news program like a high school classmate, makes her entrance by an OB van. And when the pilot (JC) went to the Studio A of PTV, Marriel comes out of the OB van for the first day of school and lands on the set. JC, the adviser and newspaper editor at Barangay Vasra High School who hires Marriel to work for a government news company. Their special guest Aljo Bendijo (who anchors the primetime newscast Ulat Bayan with Catherine Vital) deliver Marriel a Regent Cake and flowers to Marriel to wish her luck on her new show in the role of a newscaster and even take a selfie with Kaye, Arnold and Zyren before the camera starts.
After the opening show, the show begins with the news and the introduction of Marriel as the only anchor as she starts the show by saying "it's news time" at the start of the latest news. Aside from a newscasting role, Marriel is also a sports reporter, a weathergirl and a gossip reporter,
The program will make fun of the news, issues and programs of the government and beyond our primetime newscast in a fact-paced, but not boring and not serious while delivering the news. The show is with executive producers Rose Manalansang and Lunomy Merana, and directed by Jose Chito "Jet" Cabatuando and Boy Osoyos.
Catch the first episode with the first day of school and initial premiere telecast of Rated Marriel on Saturday, July 15, at 7 p.m. after PFL only on PTV 4 and its affiliate provincial stations nationwide.

Marriel is Marriel Dagohoy's self-tited debut studio album as a Filipina actress, student, singer, dancer, recording artist, model and news anchor, released in the Philippines on June 4, 2019, produced by the People's Television (PTV) and distributed by Ivory Music & Video.
Dagohoy is the first and only recording artist of PTV and marks her venture in the music industry aside from the news industry.
After Dagohoy discovered and developed by PTV in 2016, she signed a recording contract with Ivory Music & Video, becoming the youngest artist on the label. Dagohoy recorded all the songs at the age of 16, making her the youngest artist from Ivory Music & Video to ever record a full studio album.
She promoted the album at various PTV shows, radio stations and malls across the country. For physical release and digital download on iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, Guvera, Rdio and Amazon Music.
Dagohoy is currently under the management of PTV and is regarded as the "News Princess". Marriel's current sketch news sitcom Rated Marriel is the most-viewed Saturday comedy TV program in Philippine TV at present.
